www 2005 Conference

The WWW 2005 Conference took place last week in Japan and many of the papers presented at the conference are now available via the online proceedings.
The main blog is here

content blocker from Google (funny)

I got a link to contant blocker , it's nice criticism on google. I like it very much. Read specially the privacy policy.

search the open source world

A nice initiative from the koders , is trying to index all the open source projects into search engine.
But when I searched for libsvm I got some sample programs which were using libsvm not the original libsvm :(

search engine relevancy test

Now a efort to compare the 4 competiteres.

Barry and the folks at Rusty Brick have built a search engine relevancy test - essentially its a "blind" engine which gives you results randomly from either Yahoo, Google, Ask, or MSN, then asks you to rate the results (more on the details here). They call it "RustySearch" and Barry just pinged me asking me to get the word out - he needs a larger sampling of searches before he can draw any further conclusions. (His initial results are here.)

The initial results are saying that Yahoo! and Google are having same relevance. Lets see...

Omnipelagos: connecting words...

Omnipelagos finds the shortest paths between any two things.
I checked for relation between Bose and Tipu Sultan:
Bose
- also known as Netaji, a leader of the Indian independence movement and founder of the Indian National Army
Indian independence movement
[The beginnings of the British empire] Main articles: European colonies in India, British East India Company
British East India Company
[History / The road to a complete monopoly] Clive thus became the first British Governor of Bengal. Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, the legendary rulers of Mysore (in Carnatic)
Tipu Sultan

It's nice and intresting, isn't it?

lets do KDD...

Hay the call for KDD cup is up at official site.
I have registered for that, but until I finishes my project, I can't think about that. I have friends with me in our team. This time very interesting task is up. Classify the search queries. You have been given a long(800000 queries) list of search queries, now classify them into one of the 74 predefined queries. Now you a query of around 2-3 words, ya, nothing else, tell me which category it belongs to?

Now come the speciality searching

There are some startups coming with different domain specific search engines.
become.com is ready with beta of its search service to search for products. i didn't find it very general. I wanted to search for reviewes for motorola 768i mobile phone I didn't get any result. Froogle is there from google to dominate it. I got some useful links from froogle.
kayak.com is a search tool to search for travel plans. I tried to search for a flight from bangalore to bhopal, but I couldn't find any result because the site was not able to display results in my browser(why so?). Anyway travelocity is a nice site for the same.

It just the starting we have to go a long. Just for a small info. why to search billions pages and get so many irrelavent info. Just try the search engine which suits your need.
Good Luck...:)

search-war

search-war

King has entered in the war

The search-engine war has taken a new new turn. Now the king (Bill Gates) has been entered. Now big emporers are in the field. The Google is not going to have its monopoly. Yahoo! woke up very late after loosing it's major amount of users. Amazon has comeup with A9.com in the field. MSN has launched it's search.
Google is comming with new things every week. It has recently launched Google Maps. Google local is not old. it has made it's image database much larger. A9 has come up with innovative yellow pages. Teoma is already there taken by askjeevas.

So the war has just started. It has to go long. Anyway users are going to get the great benefits from this war. But..., to choose a single search engine is not an easy task. Better to go to a search engine which suits with your need. A single search engine is not able to solve all types of problems.
I used to use different engines for diff. needs. But most of the time google is my choice, teoma is also in my list. But A9 has its own style and I realy like that.

Recently yahoo has come up with contextual search. This idea was in research papers only yet. Yahoo is the one which came up first with this implementation and they have came with nice idea of taking the context from the page you are reading. I like that.

Now every team is looking for new ideas and they are dying to get new peoples having great ideas.
There are diifferent types of teams in the field. Google has the best people it can have(Google has more # of PhDs then microsoft.), Yahoo has experience, and Microsoft has power, A9 has its own setup of datamining from amazon. So friends lets see what happens when Google's confidance will challange MSN's power and how Yahoo!'s experience will take advantage over it, where A9 is silentely trying to capture the field.....................
